Nuneaton and Bedworth is a local government district with borough status in Warwickshire, with Nuneaton being the largest town in the county, and the borough also includes Bulkington, Galley Common, Ash Green and Hartshill. The victorian author George Eliot was born just outside Nuneaton in 1819, and lived in the town for much of her early life, and her novel ‘Scenes of Clerical Life’ written in 1858 depicts Nuneaton. Mary Ann Evans, better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of her time. She was the author of seven novels including; Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Felix Holt, The Radical, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda, most of which are set in provincial England and are known for their realism and psychological insight. She chose to use a male pen name, it is said, to ensure that her works would be taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names during the period but were often stereotyped of women only writing lighthearted romances. Her 1872 novel Middlemarch has been described as the greatest novel in the English language and was also serialised for television. In honour of the novelist Nuneaton’s general hospital is named after her.
Originally a small market town with Saxon origins, Bedworth developed into an industrial town in the 18th and 19th centuries, due largely to coal mining and the overspill of ribbon weaving and the textile industries from nearby Coventry. The opening of the Coventry Canal in 1769 and later, the railway in 1850 enhanced the town’s growth, and around this time the large number of public houses serving thirsty miners lead to the town being called ‘Black Bedworth’. With a moderate climate of cool winters and mild to warm summers Nuneaton & Bedworth together with the surrounding area provides perfect conditions for pests such as wasps, bees and hornets to thrive.
Wasps are a painful nuisance, especially when you are enjoying a barbecue on a lovely summers day, and here at Direct Pest we are constantly being asked ‘How to get rid of wasps nests or a bee’s nest?’ or ‘How to kill wasps?’.
Well the simplest, most cost effective, and more importantly the safest way is to call out an expert to deal with your wasp infestation! We cannot advise strongly enough that choosing to deal with a wasp nest yourself by using ‘off the shelf’ wasp killer or wasp repellent is a highly dangerous activity, with one guaranteed outcome, if you attack a wasps nest, they will attack you! A wasp nest can vary in size from that of a football up to about a metre across, and will grow very quickly, and even an average sized nest can contain up to 20,000 wasps! A single sting by one wasp is a painful experience and can be very upsetting for children. But wasps can sting a person multiple times and some people, around 10%, can have adverse reactions to stings, an allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis which in extreme cases can be fatal.
To effectively deal with your infestation by getting rid of the wasps you do not need to remove the actual nest, this will disintegrate naturally once the parasitic wasps inside have been dealt with. At Direct Pest we use a synthetic plant sterol to solve the problem of your wasp nest. This product is not available to you or I as it contains 60% permethrin, whereas the solutions available in the shops are only 0.5% to 1% permethrin.. All of our pest controllers are RSPH level 2 or above in Pest Management, and so are extremely experienced and well equipped to provide a speedy solution to your wasp problem, whether in your house, garden or business premises.
