Badgers are a particular nuisance to farmers, people with outdoor pets or livestock as they are known to eat poultry, kill lambs and eat partridge & pheasant eggs also. This can be very costly and upsetting to anyone who finds themselves under attack from badgers.
Globally, there are 8 badger species. The only one that will be found in the UK is the Eurasian badger (meles meles).
UK badgers are known to eat poultry, grain, lambs, pheasant & partridge eggs or anything they can forage in forestland and fields.
Badgers live in series of underground tunnels referred to as a ‘Sett’. They lived in mixed-sex groups of males and females and are nocturnal so will leave the sett at night. They buck convention by hunting alone as opposed to in a group like many other animals.
Badgers are very shy animals that will not actively go near to humans normally. If you find yourself nearby to a badger, especially during daylight hours, it is advisable to give it a wide berth. The badger could easily become agitated and attack, which with their sharp teeth and claws could lead to serious injury.
There are no recorded instances of eurasian badgers having ever killed a human. As they are very shy also it makes it more improbable that a badger would be in a position to injure a person fatally.
Due to their shy nature, if they feel cornered or threatened then they do become likely to attack out of fear and defence. With their sharp claws and teeth, it is for this reason why the handling of badgers should be left to a trained badger removal specialist.
