In the UK, there are 4 native species of snake. They are the grass snake (natrix natrix), the smooth snake (coronella austriaca), the barred grass snake (natrix helvetica) and the adder (vipera berus). out of the 4 species, the adder is the only native snake that is venomous.
All of the UK snakes will have a similar diet, the only difference between them being the way that they catch and subdue their prey. Their diets consist of things such as; amphibians, fish, small mammals, or even birds.
For grass snakes, barred grass snakes & smooth snakes they will hunt by constricting any prey it catches. However, in the case of the adder, as they are venomous they utilise this feature by hunting using the venomous bite to catch their prey.
For the grass snake and the barred grass snake, they can be found throughout England & Wales, but not in Scotland or Ireland. They can be found typically near to bodies of water which has lead to them being referred to as ‘water snakes’.
The smooth snake is referred to as a heathland specialist but will hunt in grasslands too. Due to their preference of heathland the smooth snake can be found prevalently in Dorset and Surrey and Hampshire.
Finally, the adder has been known to be located in Dumfries & Galloway, Worcestershire, South Yorkshire and also Bradgate Park in the middle of Leicestershire!
Snakes can be an intimidating and fear-inducing pest. Similarly to spiders, many people are greatly deterred upon discovery of a snake, and definitely from going near to or touching a snake.
We strongly believe it to be advisable to take this course of action as snakes have the potential to cause you injury via bite or constriction. This is especially true of the adder who, with it’s venomous bite, is certainly capable of causing illness, nausea or other issues too.
Although the other 3 native species can cause a human harm through bite or constriction, the UK adder is the most harmful snake in the UK.
They do have a venomous bite, although the venom that they carry poses little risk to humans.
If you were to experience an adder’s bite and it’s venom the symptoms you would experience are as follows; severe pain and swelling/inflammation around the bite vicinity, nausea and vomiting or diarrhoea.
This shows that the adder’s bite and venom, despite being painful and uncomfortable, is not fatal. However, if you have experienced a bite you should seek professional medical help immediately.
