What Are Mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes are part of the insect order, Diptera, which are 2-winged flies. Diptera are one of the most successful groups of organisms on the planet, as they are very biologically diverse. In the UK there are 30 species of native mosquitos and they can also be found all across the world. They are capable of carrying various diseases, some of which can prove fatal! A few ways to help prevent whether you have a mosquito problem is to try steps from the following list:

  • Clear up standing water so there are less breeding areas.
  • Avoid wearing dark or bright clothes, opting for white/khaki/beige colours instead.
  • Check guttering for blockages so they are not drawn to a property.
  • Use insects screens in windows and doorways.
  • Avoid perfumes and floral-scented products to decrease attraction.
  • Where possible, wear long-sleeved tops and trousers.
  • Use insect repellent sprays if problem continues.

Mosquito Facts

Mosquitoes will first begin to appear in early spring. They are acclimatised to warm but damp conditions. Once mosquitoes begin to appear they will breed quite rapidly. A female mosquito can lay between 100 to 200 eggs at a time. They can also repeat this cycle every 3-4 nights, therefore covering a wide area quickly.

On a daily basis the times that mosquitoes will be most active is at dusk and at dawn. This is in line with their internal body clock.

From early spring mosquitoes will remain prevalent until Autumn, usually around September/October when the temperature becomes cool again.

In the UK mosquitoes don’t pose as much of a health threat as in other parts of the world. However, this does not mean that they pose no risk . Both male and female mosquitoes feed from plant nectar, although only the females blood feed. This means it is only the female capable of causing infection and spreading disease. Luckily in the UK, this means that a mosquito is more of an inconvenience than a health risk.

Mosquitoes have been recorded as carrying diseases such as Malaria, West Nile Virus, Dengue Fever and Zika Virus as well as many other diseases too. Whilst this is true of mosquitoes, which disease they might carry can depend heavily on geographical location, and not all mosquito species are capable of transmission.

As a rule of thumb it is very rare for someone, in the UK, to contract a disease through mosquito-based infection.

The Asian Tiger Mosquito

The Asian Tiger Mosquito (Aedes Albopictus) is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. Over a long period of time, since the 1970’s, it has made its way across southern Europe. This was confirmed in 2016 when 2 separate cases of Asian Tiger Mosquito larvae were found in separate locations in Kent.

This particular species of mosquito have been known to carry diseases such as West Nile Virus, Dengue Fever and Chikungunya. All of these diseases have the potential to cause sustained health issues. Therefore, the potential for Asian Tiger Mosquitoes to gain a footing within the UK has to be taken very seriously.

There are 2 particular UK species that hold physical similarities to Aedes Albopictus, they are Culiseta Annulata and Aedes Geniculatus.

Due to their viral transmission rate the government did in fact put into place a national contingency plan in case the Asian Tiger Mosquito begins to appear more frequently in the UK. They also advise that if you locate and identify Asian Tiger Mosquitoes that you should contact a Mosquito Pest Control service immediately! You can read further information about Aedes Albopictus and the contingency plan here.

Mosquito FAQ

Our mosquito pest control experts have got it down to a science, but it still takes us a few days work to ensure your mouse problem is resolved. It can depend on the extent of the mosquito infestation.

In short, yes. Whilst it is very unlikely to happen in the UK, there are so many different species across the planet that are capable of carrying many different diseases. This makes it impossible to completely rule out.

It is also due to the severity of some of the specific diseases mosquitoes have been recorded carrying. In the case of the Asian Tiger Mosquito is why it can be imperative for mosquito eradication.

One of the most effective ways to block mosquitoes gaining entry to your property is to use insect screens for windows and doorways. When moving from inside to out, or vice versa, it allows opportunity for them to get in. However, it will massively deter and prevent them.

Another good practice to keep is whether or not you use floral air fresheners. These can make a mosquito believe there are plants within and lead to enticing them in.

If your mosquito problem is persistent it is worth buying over the counter mosquito repellent. There are sprays for spraying directly onto skin and ones specially designed for clothes that won’t stain fabric.

Whilst these steps should improve the problem, it does not guarantee they won’t still find a way in!
